Tasmania records 699 new COVID cases, a rise from yesterday's figures

 Tasmania has recorded 699 new COVID-19 cases, up from 504 yesterday.

The Department of Health said 16 people were in hospital but only eight were there specifically for COVID treatment. 

One person is in intensive care and more than 3,900 people are in isolation in the state. 

Just over 95 per cent of Tasmanians aged over 12 have now had their second dose of a COVID vaccine and 39 per cent have had a booster shot as well.

ABS releases latest labour force figures, unemployment rises to 4.1 per cent

Economists and analysts are expecting the Reserve Bank to hold the cash rate at 4.35 per cent, following a slight increase in the unemployment rate to 4.1 per cent. The increase, revealed in the seasonally adjusted figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday, was partially offset by 50,000 new jobs added to the economy, with labour force participation also higher than predicted. Oxford Economics Australia’s lead economist Ben Udy said Thursday’s data wouldn’t have too much of an impact on the rates, and maintained the RBA would hold the cash rate when it hands down its decision on August 6. Australians sent into panic as authorities issue tsunami warning – then say it was just a test

A brief panic gripped parts of eastern Australia on Wednesday after the national weather bureau sent a tsunami warning to thousands of residents. People along the New South Wales and Queensland coast received the Bureau of Meteorology warning, sent shortly after 11.30am, reading: “tsunami warning” and giving the location of the user. App users were informed that a tsunami was approaching, caused by an 8.2 magnitude earthquake off the west coast of New Zealand.
