Even without Trump's tariffs, Australian farmers are losing out on billions of dollars

Image
When Donald Trump announced the US would impose a blanket tariff of 10 per cent on Australian imports earlier this year, a commotion ensued. The president's so-called "liberation day" sent a wave of grievance through the farm sector, having not-long emerged from years of punitive trade disruptions imposed by China. The prospect of an importing nation charging an additional tax threatened a major hit to the hip pockets of those trading into the world's largest economy (by GDP) and, in turn, its markets. Image
That's the question one Australian kindergarten posed to dozens of families this week when it asked them to stump up A$2,200 (£1,000; $1,400) for the pleasure of taking home a curated portfolio of their child's artwork. Craigslea Community Kindergarten and Preschool in Brisbane closed last month after funding was halted amid an investigation into claims about its governance. Green hydrogen is hitting hurdle after hurdle — can anything get it moving?

Image
A few years ago, green hydrogen was the talk of Gladstone. A town built on coal was going to turn green, as the new zero-emissions fuel would become the backbone of its energy-hungry industry. Chris Skerman, who runs a local civil construction and industrial maintenance firm, remembers the conversations. "Very, very big projects were being discussed — billions and billions of dollars worth of construction in the area," he said. "It was pretty exciting." Some of the work did arrive, including Fortescue's $150 million green hydrogen facility on the city's outskirts that opened in April 2024. Just over a year later, it is now sitting silent.
