Estuaries along Western Australia's south coast breaching more frequently due to rainfall spike

Image
It was a sight not seen for years as inlets on Western Australia's south coast opened to the ocean naturally. While some open every few years, and others are dug open by machinery, more estuaries have breached the ocean over the past two years. Murdoch University's James Tweedley said increased rainfall in recent years had helped inlets break through sandbars into the ocean, with researchers studying the effect on ecosystems. man standing with blue wide brimmed hat on on the beach with blue water behind him and the sun shining Dr James Tweedley said rainfall is expected to decrease due to climate change.(Supplied) "Beaufort inlet, which is the inlet that receives the Pallinup River, was closed from 2017 until 2021," he said.  NSW Ports chief executive Marika Calfas has called for the state's trade needs to be prioritised ahead of a nuclear base, while unveiling plans for an offshore wind farm facility at Port Kembla. NSW Ports has already received approval for a second container terminal at the site, to cater for the state's shipping needs once Port Botany reaches its capacity, predicted to be in the 2040s. Ms Calfas said the facility could also accommodate a wind turbine assembly plant in the interim to service the burgeoning industry. Australians experienced their largest real wage decline on record in 2022

Image
Australians have experienced their largest real wage decline on record, with nominal wages growing by 3.3 per cent in 2022, well below inflation of 7.8 per cent. The Wage Price Index (WPI) rose by 0.8 per cent in the December quarter, lifting annual wages growth to 3.3 per cent, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics data. It means the annual pace of wage growth increased slightly by the end of December, up from 3.2 per cent in the September quarter, which was smaller than expected. And that means the 'real' value of wages declined by 4.5 per cent in 2022, the biggest deterioration on record.
