More COVID patients required ICU beds, ventilation and died during third wave of virus

 Four times as many COVID-19 patients were admitted to intensive care during Australia's third wave of the virus compared to the first two combined, new research suggests. A higher proportion of those taken ill between late June and the beginning of November last year required ventilation and ultimately, a higher percentage of them died.  The in-hospital mortality study was done by Monash University in conjunction with the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society. Demographic and clinical features were compared along with management of and outcomes for ICU virus patients during all three pandemic waves. Workplace Gender Equality Agency report shows the gender pay gap widens as women get older

 Women are vastly underpaid over their lifetimes and missing out on top management roles while pay parity with men remains elusive, according to research out today. Data from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) shows that across all generations, less than 50 per cent of women are working full time and earn consistently less than men in every age bracket. The research shows the gender pay gap for women aged 45 to 65 is about $40,000 a year and women who win chief executive roles earn an average $93,000 less than their male counterparts. The bleak data shows that if the trend continues millennial women in the workforce will earn just 70 per cent of male take-home pay by the time they turn 45. Monkeypox is not currently a global health emergency, WHO says

 The monkeypox outbreak does not currently constitute a global public health concern, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said, although this may change in the future. However, the WHO pointed to the "emergency nature of the outbreak" and said "intense response efforts" were needed to control further spread. The announcement was made after WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus convened an emergency committee on the disease. Mr Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was "deeply concerned" about the evolving threat of monkeypox, which has been identified in more than 50 countries. The committee said the outbreak should be “closely monitored and reviewed after a few weeks".
